People often ask me about looking around at different craps
tables in order to distinguish which one is best. Then, they
must assume, you can begin playing and immediately start
winning. If only it was that easy!
The truth is there is no way to know. I have seen tables
that were red-hot; every roller practically held the dice for
an unusually long period of time. I have also seen such a
table turn cold as ice. You'd almost want to bet your whole
bankroll there are thirty-six ways to make a 7 on a pair of
dice! Sometimes it's just plain frustrating.
On the other side of the coin, so to speak, I have seen
tables where hardly anyone at all was playing because it was
so cold, suddenly harbor great rolls. Nearly needless to say,
it doesn't take long for such a table to attract players. Or
for the pit-boss to change the sign stating that the minimum
has now been raised, either for that matter. They want as
little action as possible at a hot table.
Cold tables can produce a magnificent flurry of numbers,
mainly due to the fact that there are few people playing,
which means there are few bets being made, resulting in the
dice being pushed back to the shooter very quickly. In all
honesty, they are my favorite places to have a little luck
show up. Great things happen really fast! And you should see
the pit- bosses scrambling! It's really pretty funny.
I'll tell you another thing I've always found to be a bit
funny. It's the personal agenda of individuals questioning the
concept of a cold table to the point of absolutely refusing to
play at one. If any particular table stayed cold, I guess
they'd just have to cart it out of the casino, because since
it was destined to remain in its present state, there would
never again be a crowd of players hovering over it in the
future. Funny how I've never seen this happen.
The fact of the matter is luck changes. Change is the only
true constant in the universe, the last time I checked. And
taking that into consideration, one has to like the chances
that a cold table will turn into a warmer one, if normal sorts
of laws continue to apply.
If you're ever playing at one of those tables where hardly
anyone, or better yet no one, is making ridiculous proposition
bets, you too will find out how quickly a rash of numbers can
be thrown. The extremely enjoyable part is when the dealers
are having trouble with the denomination change of chips to
pay you off with. I love it when that happens! Hopefully, you
too will enjoy a similar situation soon.
